Description
Orchestra is a performing arts course for string musicians. This goal of this class is to refine musical skills relevant to performing in an orchestra setting. These skills include bow techniques, left-hand techniques, sight-reading, rhythm, intonation, dynamic contrast, phrasing, and sound production. Musicians will also be assessed in the area of music theory comprehension, improvisation, and some music history.
Objectives
At the conclusion of this course students will be able to:
· Produce a consistently characteristic sound from their instrument
· Demonstrate proper bow hold, posture, and left hand position
· Comprehend and respond to pitch and rhythm notation in the context of sight-reading
· Demonstrate proper left hand techniques and shifting for the purposes of good intonation
· Execute bow strokes called for in musical passages and exercises
· Realize concepts of musical phrasing and be able to shape intermediate pieces of music with dynamics
· Exhibit knowledge of basic music theory as relevant to their performing
· Associate their musical selections with music history
· Manage performance anxiety and strategize on how to cope with stage fright
