Course Description:
Classes start with an instant activity - Students warm up during attendance- Instructions are brief and concise to optimize time to reach MVPA- Existing activities are altered to increase physical activity (relays, team sports, elimination games) - High interest, high activity games/sports/skill practice are incorporated- Individual or small group practice is utilized. This course is intended to introduce units to students and give them a basic knowledge and understanding of the game itself along with strategies used to play the game. Students are taught the importance of team play and sportsmanship. We will focus on MVPA every day reaching the minimum moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) for 50% of the class time.
Benefits of MVPA for a minimum of 50% of class time:
Increasing MVPA in PE has the greatest potential for increasing health benefits for most students as it generates more energy expenditure; contributes to obesity prevention and muscular and bone development; reduces anxiety and stress; improves self-esteem, mood and concentration; and reduces the risk of chronic disease.
Activity-focused PE can contribute to academic performance, improved attendance and positive classroom behavior.
Increasing MVPA in PE provides more opportunities to meet other PE goals such as motor development, increased fitness, skill enhancement and positive social interactions.
