English as a Second Language

Welcome to ESL!

My name is Amber Schlueter. This is my 12th year teaching English as a Second Language, and my first year teaching at South Lakewood.

As an educator, I have endorsements in Elementary Education, Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education, and a principal's license in the state of Colorado. I have also attained a graduate level certificate in Teacher Leadership and a master's degree in Educational Leadership through Regis University.

About me: I have two children, Avery (19) and Ethan (13). My family and I moved to Littleton in August of 2013 from Minnesota. In my free time, I love learning about different cultures, seeing new places, and meeting people from around the world.

Fun Fact: South Lakewood families represent 14 different languages!

At South Lakewood we celebrate our diversity and learn from one another! Our ESL program provides support to our students who have been identified as having a language other than English in their background. ESL teachers and classroom teachers help students to develop English proficiency in the areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Support can include weekly collaboration with classroom teachers, co-teaching, coaching sessions, and flexible groups that incorporate native English speakers working on similar skills. The ESL teacher works together with classroom teachers to design instruction, enrichment, and interventions that help English language learners meet and exceed rigorous state academic standards.

Each English learner is in a unique place in their development of the language. We consider many factors when designing English language support, including ACCESS for ELL results, state assessments, informal observations, classroom teacher input, parent input, and student input. It is my goal to help all English language learners progress in their English language development to reach native-like proficiency while encouraging continued proficiency in a student's first language. I would be happy to discuss your child's individual plan and progress at any time.
