Beginning Expectations

EXPECTATIONS FOR BEGINNING OF SECOND GRADE

Upon entering second grade, your child should be able to…

Reading:

  • Re-call 80% of the reading vocabulary words taught in 1st grade (Fry Words 1-300)

  • Identify the sounds for short and long vowels (a,e,i,o,u)

  • Identify the sounds for blends and digraphs (ch, sh, wh, th)

  • Read a story on grade level independently and answer questions about the main idea, characters, setting and plot of the story

  • Put at least 3 sentences in the correct sequence (first, middle, last)

Math: Please continue to work on Math IXL.

You may choose any first grade skills for review.

  • Add and subtract numbers to 18

  • Tell time to the hour and half-hour

  • Identify fractions (1/2, 1/3, ¼)

  • Identify how many tens and ones in a number

  • Count by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s to 100

  • Count money using pennies, nickels, and dimes to $1.00

  • Identify the 3 numbers in a fact family

  • Measure using inches and centimeters

  • Know which number is greater, less than, and equal to (>,<,=)

English: Please work on Language IXL.

You may choose any first grade skills for review.

  • Put words in ABC order

  • Write a complete sentence

  • Use correct punctuation at the beginning and ending of a sentence

  • Know that a noun is a person, place, or thing

  • Know that a verb is a word that shows action

  • Know that an adjective describes a noun
