What is a behavior matrix and how can you use it at home? A behavior matrix is a document that spells out the expectations in each area of the building, whether it be at school or home. It is another tool that families can use for their children to help with problem behaviors and it's a great visual reminder.
Some examples of using a behavioral matrix in the home might be for expectations in your child's room. You might expect your child to put dirty clothes in the hamper, put their toys away when they are done playing, or respecting a sibling (if they are sharing a room). While these are all great expectations, having a visual reminder is just another tool that you can use. So, a sample of a matrix for their room might look like this......
Remember that when you create something like this for your child, you want to write your expectations in a positive way. Try to avoid words like don't, can't, etc. It might be difficult at first, but once you start you will find it becomes much easier. Below you will find a blank version of this matrix if you so choose to use it in your home. Remember to include your child in the creation of the matrix. If they have a voice, they are more likely to have ownership of their expected behaviors.
