Workshop Overview

The College Career and Civic Life (C3) Framework, published by the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) IN 2013 represents the latest thinking in standards development that leads to high quality teaching and learning. This session will focus on better understanding the implications the C3 Framework has for developing a logical scope and sequence as well as developing aligned curriculum.

Student Learning Outcomes

During our time together, we will:

  • Develop a common understanding of the instructional/assessment expectations of the C3 Framework.
  • Determine the non-negotiables of curriculum design for grades middle and high school.
  • Evaluate existing curricula and refine to align to the instructional expectations of the C3 Framework and the ISKL non-negotiables.

Fay Gore

Fay Gore is a social studies educator with over 21 years of experience. She began her career as a high school studies teacher in North Carolina. Fay transitioned to a position as a Content Specialist for North Carolina State University's Technical Outreach for Public Schools (TOPS) where she assisted with the development of high school assessments for the state of NC. For the past 12 years, she has served as both an Education Consultant and Section Chief for K-12 Social Studies at the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI). In her current role as Section Chief, she helps to set the vision for social studies in the state, assists districts with developing their local curriculum frameworks, identifies and creates support tools for educators, and provides professional learning opportunities.

Fay served as Co-chair of the Editorial Committee for the College, Career & Civic Life (C3) Framework for Social Studies State Standards that was published by the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) in 2013. Her main area of interest is developing curriculum frameworks and high quality instructional materials that result in hands-on, minds-on learning. As an independent consultant, she has experience working with schools and social studies educators across the United States and abroad to transform their social studies programs.
