Workshop Overview

For educators who bring experience with developing and implementing service learning, this weekend will stretch our abilities. Through dynamic and extended experiences we will aim for deeper understanding of the intricacies of the service learning process along with ways to heighten opportunities for students. In addition to exploring academic and school-wide service learning connections, both formal and informal, we will examine youth leadership, respecting diversity, authenticating needs with an asset model, and integrating the five elements of effective thinking. As we collaborate we will explore how to integrate approaches to teaching and learning and essential skills needed for academic and personal success.

Each of the five stages will be examined to clarify our intentions—as educators in the pursuit of developing our students as lifelong learners who engage in community. We will also:

  • Design service learning curricular maps with explicit transdisciplanry connections for your level, K-12
  • Integrate engaging teaching methods, literature and 21st century skills/ATLs within the process
  • Continue to explore the nature of reflection
  • Emphasize how demonstration is now necessarily the end point

This gathering will advance all of us, together!
