Workshop Overview

Cathy Berger Kaye, internationally renowned educator trainer on service learning and curriculum development, will be visiting July 31 - August 3 to support the following constituencies:

HS Service Team Leaders

  • Leadership training, service learning action planning and reflection for respective service teams

HS Faculty

  • Overview of service learning and work with appropriate departments on curriculum planning involving service learning.
  • Emphasis will be placed, among other things, on the new CAS requirements in the IB program.

MS Faculty/Staff

  • Overview of service learning framework

ES Faculty

  • Developing unit plans for specific grade-level teams that are incorporating service learning into their curriculum.

Student Learning Outcomes

All Faculty/Staff will:

  • Recognise the different stages of service learning (Preps through IB)
  • Sharing best practices regarding service learning.

Faculty working on unit plans will

  • Develop unit plans involving service learning experiences.
  • Determine age-appropriate service learning options (to guide student learning) and external partnerships (e.g. NGOs)

For student leaders will

  • Recognise the different stages of service learning including practical skills related to each stage.
  • Identify personal strengths, interests, habits and combine them with community needs.
  • Develop goals and action plans deemed important to service teams.

Cathryn Berger Kaye

Cathryn Berger Kaye, M.A., president of CBK Associates, is an international service learning and education consultant, author and former classroom teacher. She presents around the world and works with administrators, classroom teachers and students on current critical issues to meet the needs of 21st century learners. She is known for her work in service learning, civic responsibility, student leadership, high level literacy, respectful school communities, engaging teaching methods, environmental sustainability, and 21st century competencies. Her book, The Complete Guide to Service Learning, is used by schools and universities to promote academics with purpose.
