Workshop Overview

In this workshop, participants will be trained as 'gatekeepers' within the QPR model for suicide prevention. QPR stands for Question, Persuade, Refer, and it offers an evidence-based model for supporting individuals at risk for suicide. Gatekeepers will learn to recognize the warning signs of suicide, know how to offer hope, and know how to get help and save a life. Participants will also have an opportunity to ask questions and to explore their own role in reducing the risk of suicide deaths in their school and community.

The workshop is designed to be accessible to all individuals, including those without a background in counseling or suicide prevention. In the USA, over one million individuals have been trained in QPR; by training members in the community, the community becomes stronger, and at-risk individuals are more likely to gain access to the support they need.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understand warning signs and risk factors for suicide.
  • Understand broad trends and statistics related to suicide.
  • Learn how to respond to at-risk individuals and how to support them through listening.
  • Learn resources in the community and how to facilitate access to these resources.
