Workshop Overview
The Next Generation Science Standards represent a major shift in how science is taught and learned and focuses on making sense of the natural world. The workshop will focus on how we move from the science classroom as an environment where students learn about science concepts to a place where students work as scientists and engineers to construct explanations of how and why phenomena occur and to design solutions to problems.
Student Learning Outcomes
- Explore the Disciplinary Core Ideas, Science & Engineering Practices, and Crosscutting Concepts for a given unit and identify key learning outcomes.
- Create storylines driven by phenomena including crafting driving questions for the key learning outcomes.
- Develop performance assessment tasks based on Performance Expectations, incorporating engineering as appropriate, and determining criteria for success based on evidence statements.
- Sequence inquiry-based experiences to follow the storyline/driving questions.
- Write lessons following the 5E Learning Cycle format.
