Workshop Overview

MSIS is a 2 year Mathematics Specialist program for K-8 teachers. The program is a coherent sequence of 5 Institutes designed to expand teachers' understanding of the Common Core Standards, how students learn that content, evidence of student understanding, and how to work with peers in a mentoring relationship.

The institutes are four three day face to face institutes.

Upon completion of the five institutes, participants will be awarded a Math Specialist certificate from the Office of Overseas Schools AERO Project.

Certificate Requirement

  • Attend and participate in the five 3-day face-to-face institutes during the 2015-16 and 2016-17 school years.

Registration Requirements and Process:

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution;
  • A valid Education Teaching License;
  • Currently employed teaching in an international school for a minimum of 3 years;
  • A letter of interest expressing a 2 year commitment to the project;
  • A letter of recommendation from a current school administrator
  • Please email the letters of interest and recommendation to Su-Yen Chan at sychan@iskl.edu.my. You will be notified within three days of submission.
  • Once approved please go ahead and register yourself or your team.
  • Registration is on first come first serve basis.

Course 4 (Geometry and Measurement)

The focus is on the content and the Common Core Mathematical Practices that support the Geometry and Measurement progressions of the AERO/Common Core Standards. Attention will be given to the foundations of informal measurement and geometry in one, two and three dimensions. The van Hiele model for geometric learning will be used as the framework for how children build their understanding of length, area, volume, angles, and geometric relationships.

Erma Anderson

Erma Anderson is a former high school mathematics and physics teacher and Albert Einstein Distinguished Fellow the United States Senate. As a Senior Program Officer with the Research Council, she assisted in the development of the National Science Education Standards. She is a Christa McAulliffe Fellow with the National Foundation for Improvement of Education and was a consultant with the Council for Basic Education's Schools Around the World Project, developing and implementing a protocol and series of professional development experiences that used student work to enhance the teaching and learning of mathematics and science. More recently she has been a consultant with international schools and the AERO Mathematics and Science project.
