SEL Check-In

In addition to academic learning, I like to incorporate Social/Emotional Learning into each day. We have a morning meeting to get to know each other and build our community. We learn about empathy through Service Learning. We listen to questions and suggestions, and make requests at the end of every day. Each week students use a Google Form to tell me how they are doing and answer a question about themselves. I write the question on the board and I love to read their responses. Today I asked how many hours a child their age should sleep every night and if they actually slept that much. Everyone has a different story and their own opinion. I think they take comfort in knowing that I'm the only one who reads their responses and they feel free to spill it. :) I'll be asking some cultural questions about family traditions and their opinions about current event topics. It's interesting to get to know them. Read this article for more information about SEL - https://www.edutopia.org/blog/why-sel-essential-for-students-weissberg-durlak-domitrovich-gullotta.
