How do we know a child needs special education services in the area of specific learning disabilities?
When a student is having difficulty making academic progress in the general education classroom they are referred by their teacher and/or parent to the Student Assistance Team. The Student Assistance Team will review academic progress, strengths and weaknesses of the student. Specific scientific researched interventions are put into place to aid the student in the areas of difficulty. After data is collected and reviewed and the student is still not making progress, there will either be further interventions or the student will be referred for an evaluation to determine if they are eligible for special education services.
A team meeting will take place to determine what types of testing that will be needed to meet the concerns of the student and determine what services will be the most helpful for the student to make academic progress.
After testing and information is gathered on the student from team members, the team will meet again and go over the results. At that time it is determined if the student meets qualifications for services. If eligible for services, the team will decide what services, supports, accommodations and modifications to put into place to help the student make academic progress.
