Unit Description -
Students will investigate human rights, how those rights have been impacted by people or events, what human rights look like in different places, whether or not human rights are upheld universally, and who is responsible for safeguarding these rights. The compelling question, “Are human rights universal? Is equal always fair?” prompts students to explore human rights around the world and formulate their own opinions about equity, fairness, and civic responsibilities. In doing so, students will gain awareness about privilege and the devastating consequences of ignoring human rights violations.
Supporting Questions -
What is the difference between human needs, rights, and privileges?
How have historical events or people influenced society's definition of human rights?
How do human rights vary among nations?
