TERMS TO PONDER FOR A SOUTHEAST ASIAN ARCHAEOLOGIST: THE LEGACY OF VICTOR J. PAZ

This session is being convened in honour of Professor Victor J. Paz (1967-2024). Victor was a staunch advocate of archaeology and heritage, a tireless institution-builder, and a magnanimous mentor. In this session, we aim to celebrate his legacy in Philippine and Southeast Asian archaeology. In 2003, Paz wrote an article entitled ‘Terms to Ponder for a Southeast Asian Archaeologist’ in the Proceedings of the Society of Philippine Archaeologists (KAPI Proceedings). In this thoughtful piece, he problematised core concepts such as ‘prehistory’ and terms used for archaeological chronology, periodization, and regionalisation. Over two decades later, the disciplinal terminology used across the region continues to be questioned and challenged, particularly as epistemology, ethics, and praxis have changed across time. For instance, do we continue to divide the study of archaeology into prehistory and history, and what are the bases of their applicability within Southeast Asian archaeological discourses? Do we use deep history, palaeohistory, or early history instead of ‘prehistory’? In this light, we encourage papers that engage these discourses and ponder upon archaeology’s core concepts. We also extend the notion of ‘terms to ponder’ in the sense of terms of engagements by which archaeologists and heritage advocates enact their practices and interact with various communities and collaborators across the region. As both archaeologist and historian, Victor was deeply interested in the history of archaeological practice, and so contributions related to this topic as well as to archaeological pedagogy are also most welcome. As we try to piece together his legacy, we also encourage submissions (in the form of papers, posters, and multimedia formats) related to various projects that Victor led and was involved in, such as the Palawan Island Palaeohistory Research Project, the Catanauan Archaeology and Heritage Project, the archaeology of Manila, and Southeast Asian archaeobotany. Victor encouraged constructive debates regarding various aspects of archaeological thinking and practice, and we hope the session will engender lively discussions and discourses as a way of celebrating the archaeological life of Victor. Ang sesyong ito ay pagpaparangal kay Professor Victor J. Paz (1957-2024). Kilala si Victor sa pagtaguyod ng arkiyoloji at pamana, sa pagpapayabong ng mga institusyon, at sa pagiging mapagkaloob na guro at mentor. Sa sesyong ito, hangad naming ipagdiwang ang kaniyang legado sa arkiyoloji ng Pilipinas at ng Timog-Silangang Asya. Noong taóng 2003, isinulat niya at nailathala sa Proceedings of the Society of Philippine Archaeologists (KAPI Proceedings) ang artikulong pinamagatang 'Terms to Ponder for a Southeast Asian Archaeologist'. Dito niya pinagmuni-munian ang ilang mga pangunahing konsepto sa arkiyoloji, kasama ang paggamit ng terminong 'prehistory', gayundin ang ilang mga terminong ginagamit sa kronolohiya, pagpapanahon (peryodisasyon), at rehiyonalismo. Pagkalipas ng mahigit dalawang dekada, patuloy pa ring hinahamon ang mga terminolohiyang gamit sa disiplina ng arkiyoloji, lalo na sa harap ng pagbabago ng epistemolohiya, etika, at praxis. Halimbawa, patuloy pa rin ba náting pinagkakaiba ang pag-aaral ng ‘prehistory’ at ‘history’? At ano ang batayan ng paggamit nito sa diskursong arkiyolohikal sa Timog-Silangang Asya? Sa halip ng paggamit sa terminong 'prehistory', maaari kayáng gamitin ang 'deep history', 'palaeohistory', o 'early history'? Base sa mga nabanggit na punto, inaanyayahan ang mga ambag sa pagpapalago ng mga ganitong diskurso at sa pagninilay sa mga batayang konsepto ng arkiyoloji. Pinapalawak rin natin ang ideya ng 'terms to ponder' (mga terminong pagmuni-munian) na isaalang-alang ang mga paraang pakikipag-ugnayan ng mga arkiyolojist at mga tagapagtaguyod ng heritage, kasama ang/ng iba't-ibang mga katuwang at miyembro ng komunidad. Bilang arkiyolojist at historyador, labis rin ang interes ni Victor sa kasaysayan ng arkiyoloji o di kaya’y sa pag-aaral sa pedagohiya ng arkiyoloji, kaya’t malugod rin naming inaanyayahan ang mga ambag ukol sa mga paksang ito. Sa pagbubuo ng kanyang legado, inaanyayahan din namin ang mga kontribusyon (sa anyo ng papel, poster, o iba pang multimedia format) na may kinalaman sa mga proyektong pinangunahan at kinabilangan ni Victor. Kasama rito ang Palawan Island Palaeohistory Research Project, and Catanauan Archaeology and Heritage Project, ang arkiyoloji ng Maynila, at archaeobotany sa Timog-Silangang Asya. Bukod dito, hilig din ni Victor na maghikayat ng mga debate at pagtalakay sa iba’t-ibang paraan ng praktika at pagsasanay sa arkiyoloji. Kaya’t hangad nitong sesyon ang magbunga ng masigabong talakayan at diskurso bilang pag-alála at pagdiriwang sa arkiyolohikal na buhay ni Victor Paz. Mabuhay ka, Victor!
