School History

Happy Valley has a deep rich history in Carter County. Nearby are Sycamore Shoals and the site of the original Fort Watauga. Nearby also is Powder Branch where Mary McKeehan Patton made gunpowder used by the Overmountain Men in their great victory over the British at King's Mountain, North Carolina.

Originally built in 1923 as First High School, it was a consolidation of several small schools that made their way to become the renamed Happy Valley School by 1926. over the years several other schools were incorporated in as they too were closed due to age. The original building site was closed in 1961 and classes moved to their current location on Milligan Highway.

In 1972 the 7th and 8th Middle School Grades were transferred to the newly opened Happy Valley Middle School located next to the high school on Warrior Hill. Later in 1978 the 6th Grade moved there. It wasn't until 1994 that the remaining 5th Graders were also moved to Happy Valley Middle to complete the school system we have today as a Pre-K - 4th Grade school.

We are proud of Happy Valley Elementary School and its history.  Our history is truly rich in heritage.
