Meet Mr. Brian Luther, Junior High English Teacher and proud Hubbard alumnus at Hubbard Middle School!
Hello! I am Brian Luther, it is very nice to meet you, and I am your child's English teacher for this school year!
I was born and raised in Hubbard, and graduated from Hubbard High School in 1984. As a student here, I was a two time Optimist Oratorical speech champion at Reed Middle School. I was a trumpet player in the Hubbard High School Marching Band, a student actor in Hubbard High School musical play productions of "Irene", "Guys and Dolls", and "The Pajama Game" and a news writer, a layout editor and designer for The Hub, and writer on The Bard staff. I truly enjoyed my time as a "Hubbard Kid" in the late 70's and early 80's!
I earned my Bachelor's Degree in Rhetoric and Communications from Kent State University in 1990. While at Kent State, I was a student orientation instructor, and traveled to Eastbourne, England to take part in a Communication and Culture exchange program which toured London and interacted with other college students from all over the world in May, 1989. I then received my teaching degree from Youngstown State University in 1994 in Secondary Education, followed by my Master's Degree from Youngstown State in 2000.
Prior to teaching here in Hubbard, I student taught at Chaney High School. My professional career started at Lowellville High School, where I was a member of the faculty from the fall of 1994 to the spring of 1999. While in Lowellville, I taught 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade English, as well as Speech. I was also the adviser for the high school newspaper, The Rocketeer, and yearbook, The Echo.
I returned home to Hubbard and began teaching at Reed Middle School in the fall of 1999, and have taught the 7th and 8th grade English Language Arts curriculum during my time here. From 1999 until 2002, I was the Grades 7 - 9 advisor for the YSU English Festival and have returned to that position in 2017. From 2000 to 2004, I was Equipment Manager for the Eagle Varsity Football team, and have also served as a chaperone in many capacities for our schools, accompanying the 6th, 7th and 8th grades on class trips to Philadelphia, Columbus, Cincinnati, Toronto, Chicago, Hershey PA, Kennywood Park, Geauga Lake/Six Flags Ohio and Gettysburg, as well as a faculty chaperone for the marching band's annual Band Camps at Thiel College, and the Marching Band's trip to Orlando/Walt Disney World in February of 2018.
As evidenced by the sounds within my classroom during class exchange, I am a lover of music, ranging from classic big band, jazz, pop, and rock and roll. I love Spotify, and at the moment am listening to massive amounts of Van Halen, and creating playlists for works and Units within my curriculum. Sports plays a big role in the atmosphere and decoration of my classroom... my favorite football teams are the Miami Dolphins, the Ohio State Buckeyes, and of course our very own Hubbard Eagles.
Currently, I enjoy my duties as the "Voice of Hubbard" announcing for the Musical Pride of Hubbard and our Hubbard Eagles on Friday nights in the fall, as well as our Boys and Girls Varsity Basketball teams in the winter. I also proudly emcee for the Hubbard Middle School Pep and Veterans' Day assemblies, perform as the pronouncer for our Hubbard Middle School Spelling Bee, and occasionally provide accompanying narration for our schools' concert band performances and just about any other similar type of activity for our district. In June 2019, I was honored to be selected as an A+ Teacher by the Trumbull County Retired Teachers' Association, an award that I am quite proud of and a professional highlight of my teaching career. More recently, I was chosen as an Ohio Lottery Teacher Appreciation Winner, and was honored during my attendance at the Mahoning Valley Scrappers' game at Eastwood Field on July 31, 2021.
This school year promises to be a memorable time for us all, with many moments of fun, challenges, growth, and change. It is my privilege to be a part of your child's English education this year, and I ask that if you have any questions or concerns to please email or call me at the links provided below, during 9:30 - 10:00 AM on Monday through Friday. I thank you for your support of my teaching efforts, and wish you all the best in the upcoming school year!
GO EAGLES!
