Top Things To Know About Your Mac:
VERY USEFUL: Hitting the two keyboard keys Command (⌘)-Spacebar will launch something called Spotlight. It helps you find things quickly on your computer. In the Spotlight Search blank that pops up, type in the name of the program or file you desire and it will give you any result that matches. Click on the one that you need.
Most students take screenshots A LOT. To make a Screenshot that is saved to your Desktop, press the keys ⌘-Shift-4 and drag a rectangle around what you want to take an image of. Then, go to your Desktop to see it (see next tip). Rename the screenshot so it's easy to identify later.
A fast way to get to your Desktop is by hitting the fn key (bottom left of your keyboard) and the F11 key (on the top row of your keyboard). Hit fn-F11 again to get back to the previous screen. There are other ways to do this, too. Ask others how they switch between screens easily.
To get to the internet, we use either Chrome or Safari.
They are located on your Dock. Usually your Dock is at the bottom of your screen and has all of your most-often used programs for easy-access.
To bookmark or "favorite" a website: Hit ⌘-D in Chrome or Safari.
It's called Bookmarks in Chrome; it's called Favorites in Safari. Most students choose which browser (Chrome or Safari) they like better and then use it most of the time.
In Chrome, most students put important bookmarks on their Bookmark Bar (make sure it's turned on under your View menu). Then, they just press the shortcut whenever they need it.
Finder is where ALL of your laptop's files are located.
Whenever you download something from the internet (Chrome or Safari), it downloads to your Downloads folder. You get to this folder by through going to Finder.
We get our classwork and homework assignments through Google Classroom. While most teachers use Google Classroom, a few might use Moodle instead.
We use Google Docs to type up papers, and they are stored on Google Drive. Most students and teachers store school files here and then either Share them or upload/attach them to assignments in Google Classroom.
We use GMail for our school email.
All school email addresses are in here. Compose a message and start typing part of a name to see your options appear and narrow down.
