Hello Everyone - Welcome to our Homework Page.
Students can expect to have about 30 minutes of homework each evening in Grade 4.
If there is no official homework, please see that your child spends some time reading everyday.
Students can also be practicing their cursive handwriting, typing skills, addition or subtraction facts or multiplication tables.
Keeping a journal is another way students can make writing a regular part of their routines.
You will be able to find any homework assigned listed here, but may also need to check the "Google Classroom" for details about assignments. Tasks are listed by date and subject title there. I will post work on the classroom for students absent for extended periods of time to ensure they do not fall too behind in their work.
This Classroom website provides other valuable information besides daily homework requirements such as: vocabulary associated with the units and additional materials/resources under the subject headings: Math, Literacy, Science and Social Studies. I will continue to add information regarding the topics of study we will be visiting, in the weeks and months to come.
New Codes will be posted in the next couple of weeks.

Dear Parents/Guardians
Well our first few days are behind us and we are off to a great start in our Grade Four classroom. The children have enjoyed the “getting to know one another” activities and are doing a great job learning the classroom routines and expectations.
Our first unit of study in Science is Rocks and Minerals. The children are eager to dive into our class rock collection and start learning about the most ancient thing on the planet! If your child would like to start a rock collection of their own, they are most welcome to begin one and bring it into class to share.
We will start with a little review in Math, covering addition and subtraction strategies to improve accuracy with larger numbers and mental math skills. as well as reading, writing, and building larger numbers using place value. Reading, writing and comparing numbers as well as place value will be the focus after that. Literacy classes begin with an introduction to various reading genres, (e.g., fiction, mystery, biography) as I hope to encourage them to try new books and authors during independent reading time at school and at home. It is important that everyone has a book they will enjoy reading with them daily.
One of the expectations in our Literacy program is to read independently daily. Students will bring home a Reading Log tonight that I hope will be filled out daily, and returned to school at the end of every month. I realize that lives are busy and this may not be possible every day, but it is my wish that students will read at home for a little while in the evenings, particularly when no other homework has been assigned.
For the most part unless work isn’t completed in class there won’t be a lot of homework. Students will be expected to prepare for occasional quizzes and do any remedial work sent home, but for the most part, all will be given ample time to complete their work in class.
It would be wonderful if you could sometimes read with your child in the evenings and discuss the content. This helps to develop critical thinking skills and an appreciation for stories, and the lessons they hold. Reading aloud to them is also important, allowing the kids to experience stories they are maybe not yet able to read on their own. Having your child read aloud to you from a just right reading level is also beneficial to further develop fluency and oral expression.
In addition, research clearly shows that daily reading has a direct impact on student academic success. Vocabulary and general knowledge increase, as does the stamina required to read for more sustained periods of time in higher grades. I hope we can work together to develop your child's daily reading habits and skills. I assure you the commitment will pay off if you can encourage your child to see the value in it.
I am sending along a “Raising Rising Stars” question form for you to fill out at your convenience. This, of course, is voluntary. I find that parents are often happy to have the opportunity to share valuable nuggets of information or tips that will help me better understand or motivate their children. I would like to know how the kids are finding their first week back, and if they are showing any signs of nervousness or anxiety about their return to school.
Have a great weekend. Looking forward to the week ahead and all that is to come.
Mrs. Flindall
Dear Parents
Welcome to our classroom and the start of a brand new school year! For those of you who do not know me, my name is Sharon Flindall and I have been happily teaching in the Junior grades for over 20 years. I love teaching at Glenview, and am very excited to be delivering the Grade 4 program to your children this year.
There is not much you are required to provide as far as school materials are concerned. I will supply the children with all the notebooks they need, as well as paper, pencils, rulers, glue sticks and scissors. If they would like to have special markers or pencil crayons of their own, that is great, but these items will also be provided for anyone who needs them. A pencil case and small 3 ring binder for Math papers are all that is really required.
Students should have a pair of indoor running shoes at school to keep the classroom floors clean. They will also need them in Phys Ed class as shoes without rubber soles will not be permitted on the new Gym floors. A bag for shoes to hang on their hook in the cloakroom will keep shoes off the floor, which is helpful to the custodial staff as they sweep up in the evenings. A set of headphones would also be a good purchase for use with the chrome books. For those who would like to donate a box of Kleenex, that would be very nice too as cold and flu season will be here before we know it.
We have a Google Classroom which will be used to help students keep up during absences and to post spelling lists, useful websites and study materials. Students will also use it to find learning activities when we have access to the Chromebooks. Please ask the children to check their mail for their invitation to join the Classroom. It will be shared with them within the first week or two of school. Most of the kids know how to join but for those who want a refresher, they need only enter their username and password to login to their HDSB school account. After that they simply respond to the prompt to join.
In addition, I keep a website which will provide you with daily homework expectations and dates for upcoming events. A monthly newsletter outlining learning topics and class news will be posted there and a copy will be sent to your email as well. You can access the website using the staff link on the Glenview Public School website or at the bottom of any email correspondence between us.
We will use agendas this year but unfortunately, they will not arrive for the Junior students until the end of the month. The kids should take good care of them as there is only one agenda issued per child. Please sign these daily to ensure you are aware of daily expectations or personal communications.
QDF will occur most days and Gym classes are on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. I know the kids will be excited to learn that Mr. D is teaching the Tuesday class. Our weekly visit to the library will occur on Thursday afternoons.
There is more to share about our first topics of study in Literacy, Math and Science but that will wait for the next correspondence. The first couple of weeks we will get to know one another and establish the learning expectations and routines that will keep our classroom running smoothly. It is important to me we create a positive, welcoming safe place to learn; and that each school day is fun-filled and productive. It is my hope that the children come home happy and look forward to returning to school each and every day.
Please also know that my door is always open to you. I believe our strong partnership is important to your child's success this year, so I am very happy to answer any questions or address concerns you may have about your child’s academic progress or emotional wellbeing. Although the days are busy, I will do my best to get back to you as quickly as I can.
I look forward to meeting those who are able to bring their children to school on Wednesday morning. We will meet in the A Zone on the Junior Blacktop.
Cheers to a great year ahead!
Sincerely,
Sharon Flindall
