Welcome Newsletter
Dear Parents
Welcome to our classroom and the start of a brand new school year! For those of you who do not know me, my name is Sharon Flindall and I have been happily teaching in the Junior grades for over 20 years. I love teaching at Glenview, and am very excited to be delivering the Grade 4 Grade 4 program to your children this year.
There is not much you are required to provide as far as school materials are concerned. I will supply the children with all the notebooks they need, as well as paper, pencils, rulers, glue sticks and scissors. If they would like to have special markers or pencil crayons of their own, that is great, but these items will also be provided for anyone who needs them. A pencil case and small 3 ring binder for Math papers are all that is really required.
Students should have a pair of indoor running shoes at school to keep the classroom floors clean and will also need them for use in Phys Ed class shoes without rubber soles will not be permitted on the beautiful new Gym floors. A bag for shoes to hang on their hook in the cloakroom will keep shoes off the floor which is helpful to the custodial staff as they sweep up in the evenings. A set of headphones would also be a good purchase for use with the chrome books. For those who would like to donate a box of Kleenex, that would be very nice too as cold and flu season will be here before we know it.
We have a Google Classroom which will be used to help students keep up during absences and to post spelling lists, useful websites and study materials. Students will also use it to find learning activities when we have access to the Chromebooks. Please ask the children to check their mail for their invitation to join the Classroom. It will be shared with them within the first week or two of school. Most of the kids know how to join but for those who want a refresher, they need only enter their username and password to login to their HDSB school account. After that they simply respond to the prompt to join.
In addition, I keep a website which will provide you with daily homework expectations and dates for upcoming events. A monthly newsletter outlining learning topics and class news will be posted there and a copy will be sent to your email as well. You can access the website using the staff link on the Glenview Public School website or at the bottom of any email correspondence between us.
We will use agendas this year but unfortunately, they will not arrive for the Junior students until the end of the month. The kids should take good care of them as there is only one agenda issued per child. Please sign these daily to ensure you are aware of daily expectations or personal communications.
QDF will occur most days and Gym classes are on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. I know the kids will be excited to learn that Mr. D is teaching the Tuesday class. Our weekly visit to the library will occur on Thursday afternoons.
There is more to share about our first topics of study in Literacy, Math and Science but that will wait for the next correspondence. The first couple of weeks we will get to know one another and establish the learning expectations and routines that will keep our classroom running smoothly. It is important to me that we create a positive, welcoming, safe place to learn; and that each school day is fun-filled and productive. It is my hope the children come home happy and look forward to returning to school each day.
Please also know that my door is always open to you. I believe our strong partnership is important to your child's success this year, so I am very happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have about your child’s progress or emotional wellbeing. Although the days are busy, I will do my best to get back to you as quickly as I can.
I look forward to meeting those who are able to bring their children to school out on the blacktop Wednesday morning.
Cheers to a great year ahead!
Sincerely,
Sharon Flindall
