TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

While cultivating my educational philosophy, I have focused primarily on what I imagine as the end product of my teaching and the qualities that I would like my students to gain from their educational experience.

Classroom Expectations:

  • Health and PE Syllabus

Hendersonville High School

Grading Policy:

Grades are based on dressing out and participating in activities during each class period. Grades are awarded as follows:

  • One participation grade per week - 100 total points/week, 20 points/day
  • 20 points - fully dressed out with appropriate shoes, fully participates
  • 15 points - not dressed in appropriate clothes, but has shoes and fully participates
  • 0 points - does not have appropriate shoes, chooses not to participate, or is not allowed to participate due to behavior issues

Dressing Out:

We do not sell gym uniforms. Students are responsible for bringing their own athletic attire for class. It must 1) be something other than what they wore to school, and 2) fit the school dress code (no spandex or tank tops). Athletic shoes must offer support during game play (skateboard shoes, boat shoes, and/or sandals are not acceptable).

Participation:

Students are expected to participate fully in class. This will include warm ups, skill development, and game play. Failure to participate in part of class will result in point deduction. Level of skill or fitness will not impact your grade, but attitude and effort can!

Lockers:

ALL VALUABLES SHOULD BE SECURED IN THE MAIN BUILDING LOCKER. Boys will not have lockers to use during PE class. Girls will be supplied a lock and locker for use during the school year at no cost, as long as lock is returned undamaged. MAKE SURE TO LOCK YOUR LOCK. Lost or broken locks will be assessed a $10 fee.

Cell Phones:

In conjunction with school rules, the PE dept. has a strict NO CELL PHONE policy. This helps deter theft and prevent broken phones. Students who use their phones during class will have phones taken, and turned into the office to be picked up at the end of the day. If students need to access a phone, they will be allowed to go to the main office.

Health Class:

Students participating in Health and Physical Education will have health class one to two days per week. Health class grades are based on correct completion of class assignments, and recorded as separate grades in addition to the student’s weekly participation grade. On health days, students will not dress out and should come to class prepared with PAPER and a PEN or PENCIL.

Tardies:

It is possible to be tardy to class twice in one class period. Students are expected to be on time to class, meaning in the gym by the time the tardy bell rings. Tardies to class are recorded, and discussed with the student if they are more frequent than once a week. Excessive tardies to class will result in 7:30 morning detentions.

Students are given 5 minutes after the tardy bell to dress and return to the gym for attendance. A whistle will be blown at the one minute warning to alert students to their time remaining. Tardies to participation result in deductions from that student’s daily participation points.

Health Issues:

Students who have a chronic medical problem that impacts their participation in PE should bring a doctor’s note for the teacher to have on file and accommodations will be made. If students are experiencing acute illnesses (colds, stomach viruses, etc) a note from a parent will excuse the sick student for up to 2 days before a doctor’s note is required. Please contact us in the event of an extended illness.

Behavior:

Behavior issues will be handled by the teacher on an event by event basis. If behavior violates school rules, parents will be contacted and the student will be referred to the front office. Poor sportsmanship, or excessively bad attitude can result in removing that student from the game/skill/activity. Dismissal from activity will result in loss of daily participation points.

Expectations:

Every student is expected to dress out daily, and participate in activities to the best of their ability. Each student is expected to come to class on time and with a good attitude. Students are expected to act with integrity in their class work, and to act with good sportsmanship in their physical actions. Respect of the teacher, and other classmates is expected at all times. Acts of bullying and disrespect will not be tolerated.
