Frequently Asked Questions

1. Do students have to re-qualify for AIG each year? What about when they move from elementary to middle school? No. Students do not have to re-qualify for gifted services each year. Each year, you will receive a Yearly Performance Review describing the level of service for the upcoming year. When students move from elementary to middle school, a new Differentiated Education Plan (DEP) is developed with AIG staff at the middle school.

2. If my child doesn’t place in AIG, can he/she be re-tested? Yes. A student can be nominated again the following school year. Teachers usually wait a calendar year before re-nominating. AIG staff can use previous test data for the new nomination.

3. Does my child get a grade on their report card for AIG? No. There is no space on the report card specifically for AIG. However, a progress report will be sent home quarterly if your child is identified. Nurtured students will not receive a progress report.

4. What is the difference between identified and nurtured students? Identified students meet the criteria to be officially labelled as "gifted" while nurtured students have demonstrated a need for differentiated activities. Generally, students are nurtured when they excel in the classroom and on assessments. Teachers collect data and recommend students as the need arises. When students are nurtured, they may attend AIG classes for a unit of instruction, for a nine weeks, or for the entire year -- depending on individual need. In the AIG classroom however, there is no distinction between nurtured and identified students. We work together to achieve the same goals.

5. Where can I find out about enrichment opportunities for my child? Check out the "Enrichment Opportunities" link. This link will be updated throughout the year. If you find hear of exciting opportunities, please email me so that I can add the link.
