Syllabus

Course Description:

Freshmen Literature & Composition is aligned with ACT and Kansas College and Career Readiness Educational Standards. Learning is as student centered as possible, depending on the size of the class and available resources. Students will explore the historical, philosophical, and rhetorical circumstances in which texts were written, as well as investigate the circumstances in which texts are read. When they write, students will refine their interpretive and persuasive skills, develop facility with research, and explore structure and style.

The Catholic Faith:

When possible, students will have opportunities to study and explore the works of Catholics, and are encouraged to pursue their own interests in this area in individual research, written response and analysis.

Texts:

Introduction to Literature, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt

Romeo & Juliet, William Shakespeare

Various supplemental works of different types and genres

Materials:

Students will need a Chromebook, a notebook/loose leaf paper, # 2 pencils and/or pens w/black or blue ink.

Plagiarism:

Students are expected to maintain high integrity with regards to academic honesty. While discussions with peers are recommended prior to actual production of an assignment, individual work should be completed alone. Random plagiarism checks will be run at least 3 times each semester. Copying from any source (other students, books, magazines, or the internet) will result in a 0 and a disciplinary referral, as per the Hayden High School Handbook. Students will not be able to redo any assignments if plagiarism is identified.

Cell Phones:

Cell phone use is not allowed during class periods unless the teacher specifically gives permission. During class, cell phones must be turned off and not visible. Cell phones are allowed during passing periods and lunch. Unauthorized use of cell phones during class will result in confiscation.

100 - 92% A

91 - 84% B

83 - 75% C

74 - 67 % D

Below 67% Failing


Weighting:

Final Exam: 10 %

Tests/Papers/Major Projects: 50%

Homework and daily assignments: 20%

In-class participation and group work: 10%

Quizzes: 10%



Late Assignments:

Students are expected to keep up with assigned reading, assignments and projects. The teacher is available to answer questions or offer extra assistance immediately prior to school each morning and following school dismissal each afternoon. Feel free to arrange an appointment for a conference during either of these time periods. In the event of a personal difficulty, please consult with the teacher prior to the due date of an assignment so that other arrangements can be made. Otherwise, late assignments will receive a 10 percent penalty the first day they are late, a 30 percent penalty the second day they are late and a 50 percent penalty for 3 or more days.
