Rich Internet Applications (RIAs) is a suite of free web-based tools developed by the Center for Language Education and Research (CLEAR) at Michigan State University. The RIAs can be used to create multimedia-based materials, activities, and assessment for second language learners.
The RIAs can be accessed at http://clear.msu.edu/teaching/online/ria/. Before you can use the applications, you will first need to register on the site.
There are twelve applications that can be used for different purposes. Below is the list of all the RIAs with a brief description of what each of them can do:
Audio Dropbox: a dropbox for students to record audio
Broadcasts: a podcasting program for language learning
Conversations: a tool for recording questions for students to answer them asynchronously
Mashups: a great tool that allows for combining video, audio, text, and interactive exercises
QuizBreak!: a flexible program for creating fun language games
Revisions: a platform that supports process writing
Scribbles: a tool for handwriting practice online
SMILE: a tool for creating interactive language-practice exercises
Snapshot: an image library that stores pictures for use in Mashups and Quizbreak
Video Dropbox: a dropbox for students to record video
Viewpoint: an audio and video repository that allows for recording audio and video files online, or uploading existing media.
Worksheets: interactive worksheets that allow for audio/video recording, multiple-choice and matching questions, etc.
There are video and PDF guides for each application available on the RIAs website listed above. Also, please note that because the RIAs are Flash-based, they will not work on iOS mobile devices.
