The SLT courses gave me a huge opportunity to meet great people and improve my skills. All of the things that I learned in the classroom have been very valuable for me, but I especially enjoyed the tutoring experience. It taught me how rewarding a career in teaching is, and it made me want to learn even more about this field. Now I have a job as an English teacher back in my home country. I feel very proud that I can share what I learned to help others learn their new language. Teaching is truly my biggest passion, and I really enjoy it.

Discovering the SLT Program at KCC was a revelation to me. It introduced me to the world of teaching and helped me understand it through interesting discussions, debates, and multiple creative activities. The program encouraged me to pursue my goal of becoming a teacher, and of becoming a part of the lives of many students in the future. Today, thanks to that program I am one step closer to entering a classroom and teaching English to future students around the world. The SLT Program at KCC has prepared me for my transition to UH Mānoa’s Second Language Studies B.A. Program. The SLT program offers valuable classroom experiences as an English tutor through Service Learning opportunities in the community. The more I developed my tutoring skills, the more I felt the program supported my future endeavor as an ESL/ELL teacher. If it were not for the SLT Program, I would have missed out on the rewarding opportunity to learn from successful instructors and explore my own philosophy of teaching.

Being raised around second language speakers, I have realized that English language is essentially a gateway for a higher education, job opportunities, and personal advantages. The SLT Program provided me with insights about socio-cultural differences, second language pedagogy, and second language development, and hands on opportunities, such as tutoring ESOL students at KCC. Inspired by the students I’ve tutored, my SLT classmates, and support from the program motivated me to major in SLS and become a second language teacher. As an SLS major at UH Manoa, the SLT Program definitely equipped me with the fundamental tools and experience needed to succeed in the SLS Program as well as a preview to my future: I’m looking forward to taking my education around the world.

The SLT Program can give you the opportunities and skills required to become a language teacher. The classes in this program are well designed and have many clear goals. This program has many international students, and therefore, you can gain meaningful information about second language learning experiences from your classmates, too. The instructors also have a lot of experience teaching language to international students, and some even specialize in teaching English to both international and non-international students.
