I Ling's Page

I was born and raised in Taiwan and I came to the U.S. in 2007 to study linguistics. I spent my first five years in New York and now I have been teaching undergraduate Chinese courses at the University of Rhode Island since 2012.

My teaching philosophy is driven by the belief of an ancient Chinese proverb:“不闻不若闻之, 闻之不若见之, 见之不若知之, 知之不若行之。” — Xunzi

(Tell me, I forget. Show me, I remember. Involve me, I understand.)

I always look for the best practices for my students to engage them to achieve their goals. I enjoy working in team collaboration and create a sense of community among the instructors and students. I have recently collaborated with the Chinese professors at the Honghe University (Yunnan, China) and developed language and cultural exchange projects for the novice and intermediate learners for both my F2F and online courses. It's a valuable experience to see how students from the two sides of the world working together overcoming the language barrier and time differences and trying to understand each other's culture. I'd like to express my gratitude to the 2016 PBLL ISI facilitators and participants for the inspiration!

Some key experiences that have significantly influenced my philosophy of teaching and learning include serving as an instructor at community colleges and a public research university; teaching in immersion programs and online courses, supervising student teachers, and the professional development works I have done in proficiency-based teaching, assessments, and project-based language learning.

I am excited to come back to NFLRC and looking forward to having a productive workshop with you!
