The S-designation Board is accepting new applications for courses until Tuesday September 9, 2025. If approved, the SF designation will take effect in the Spring 2026 semester.
S-designation approval is given to an instructor + course combination. Each instructor teaching a section of the course must submit his or her own proposal to be approved. Once approved, the section will be designated as satisfying the Sustainability Focus requirement for 3 years. At the end of the approval period, the designation can be renewed for 5 years.
S-designation approval is given to all faculty teaching the course. A discipline coordinator or a designated faculty member who teaches the course should fill out the Course-Based Application, requesting that all sections of the course be S-designated. Once approved, the course will be designated as satisfying the Sustainability Focus requirement for 3 years. At the end of the approval period, the designation can be renewed for 5 years.
All approved syllabi must include the two following statements:
“This course has a Sustainability Designation (SF). Sustainability topics are integrated into the main course material and will constitute a substantial portion of the course.”
"SFCOs are separate from SLOs and will be assessed independently."
Carefully review the application and hallmarks before deciding to propose a course, as your proposal will need to clearly demonstrate how the course meets each hallmark. Please also attach an annotated syllabus with your application.
If you have any questions, please contact one of the S-designation Co-Chairs.
