During the University of Hawaiʻi's Board of Regents meeting of 21 May 2026, UH President Wendy Hensel announced a new scholarship for community college transfer students, the Next Step Scholarship. This scholarship will provide eligible UH Community College students up to $2,000 to continue their education at a UH four-year campus.
The Next Step Scholarship is an automatic financial award for UH Community College graduates transitioning to a four-year UH campus. There is no separate application; eligible students are identified automatically when they transfer.
To qualify for the Next Step Scholarship, a student must meet the following criteria:
Degree Completion: Earned an Associate Degree from a UH Community College in the 2025–26 academic year, or completed sufficient credits in an approved pathway/major.
Transfer Status: Enrolling at a UH four-year campus (UH Mānoa, UH Hilo, UH West Oʻahu, or UH Maui College) for the Fall 2026 semester.
Award Details:
Full-Time: $2,000
Part-Time: $1,000
Since the scholarship is automatically awarded, your primary task is to finalize your transition.
Check Your Email: If you qualified and met the automatic admission requirements, you should receive a notification email.
Commit to a UH 4-Year Campus: Follow up on your automatic admission to accept your spot at your intended UH 4-year campus.
Submit Your FAFSA: While not strictly required to receive the Next Step Scholarship, all students are encouraged to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to stack other federal or state financial aid on top of your award.
Contact the Admissions Office: If you believe you are eligible but have not received an award notice, you should directly contact the admissions office at the UH four-year campus you plan to attend.
