Inflammation of the eyelids and will usually see some crusting on the lids as a result
There are multiple causes of blepharitis
Also called Grave's Ophthalmology
Grave's Disease is an autoimmune condition where the thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone, hence, causing hyperthyroidism
Causes Exophthalmos (eyes bulge out from orbit)
Exophthalmos is a more severe for of Proptosis where the eye bulges out more than 2mm
Exophthalmos
Due to a blocked meibomian gland
This can also become infected
Definitive treatment is incision & drainage
These form on the tip of your eyelid, and similarly to a chalazion, are caused by blockage of glands
These can also become infected
Droopy upper eyelid which can cause a obstruction of the upper visual fields
Caused by muscle weakness, nerve damage, Horner's Syndrome, Myasthenia Gravis
Excessive skin on the upper lid
Seen often in older patients
Similar to Ptosis in that it can block the upper visual field
When the conjunctiva becomes loose and wrinkled
Most commonly due to aging and can cause dry eye symptoms
Demodex Folliculorum are mites that infest the base of the eyelashes
They can cause blepharitis, as well as dry eyes
Treatment includes tea tree oil and Xdemvy
Trichiasis is when your eyelashes grow inward into your eye, instead of outward
This can cause considerable irritation and discomfort to the patient as the lashes rub into their eye
Cellulitis is inflammation/infection of soft tissues an can occur anywhere
Preseptal cellulitis is infection of the eyelid and surrounding soft tissues anterior to the orbital septum
It is more common in children
Also more common in children
Infection of the eyelid and surrounding soft tissues that spreads posterior to the orbital septum
Can lead to proptosis (eye bulging outward) and restricted eye movement/vision!
Proptosis!!!
Proptosis is a general term for the eye bulging outward
Also has conjunctival chemosis (conjunctival swelling)
1) Basal Cell Carcinoma
The most common form of skin/eyelid cancer
Usually looks pearly or translucent
Not life threatening
2) Squamous Cell Carcinoma
These usually present more red and crusted
3) Melanoma
These are life- threatening and need to be removed ASAP!
This is a malignant tumor of the Melanocyte cells is the skin, which is why they ae darker in color
These are more deeply mottled in red and black color
The depth of invasion into the tissue is the most important factor in the prognosis
