Fundations/Word Work
Fundations -a phonics program that enables students to identify each sound through the tapping of fingers. This allows students to be able to hear sounds in isolation then blend the sounds together in order to be able to spell a word correctly.
Our class will work on proper letter formation and phonemic awareness
This week's sound:
Continue letter formation practice at home - practicing proper handwriting early in the year will help students get into good habits for a year of various forms of writing.

* Make sure to practice spelling the sight words every day.
EnVision Math
EnVision Math is an interactive math program that places emphasis on developing and securing skills through the use of visual aids and technology connected to the Common Core. Through repetition and exploring deep into concepts, students will expand and grow their knowledge of math. In order to build this solid foundation, we will use "hands on" materials, play interactive math games, work with partners and share ideas through discussion.

Writer's Workshop
The Writer's Workshop program teaches students the process of writing. Students will learn about the conventions of writing, how stories should begin, how stories should end, adding details and editing. Along the way, students are encouraged to use invented spelling in the construction of their stories. This allows children to be able to put their thoughts on paper rather than worrying about how to spell a word correctly. Students will publish and share their writing on a regular basis. The class will do journal writing, create personal narratives, respond to story prompts and take part in bookmaking throughout the year.
Guided Reading
Students will be placed in reading groups of similar ability in the beginning of the school year. This will be done based on scores obtained by completion of the Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark test. This assessment shows a student's strengths in reading and identifies areas of concern. Throughout the year, each reading group will meet about 2 to 3 times per week to read and discuss stories at their current instructional reading level. Students will use a variety of learned reading strategies to help decode unknown words, answer questions to improve comprehension and retelling skills and complete extension activities in a response log.
Shared Reading
Students will take part in daily reading lessons to help acquire and improve a variety of reading skills. These skills are developed during mini-lessons that target certain skills. Through the use of big books, students can develop comprehension, retelling, sequencing, compare and contrast, inferring and fluency skills.
