Rules & Expectations

1. All students are welcome. Everyone can learn French and I’m happy to have you all here. Everyone will be treated with respect.

2. Seats are assigned by me and I reserve the right to change them at any time. We generally have a new seating chart at the start of a new unit.

3. Arrive on time to class and expect to stay the entire period.

  • Use the restroom, chat with teachers, and go to your locker between classes.

  • You are responsible for any information and/or materials you miss while you are out of the room.

4. All cell phones and electronic devices should be in your backpack at all times. Electronic devices should be turned off or silenced and put away before the start of class. No headphones should be worn or visible, and all smart watches and bluetooth headphones are forbidden. Any cell phones that are out during class without my explicit permission will spend the rest of the period in la Bastille (my cell phone jail) and the phone will be sent to the office for the rest of the school day.

5. No eating in the classroom (exception of snack time). Beverages in sealed containers are okay.

6. Seek help early and often. Remember that many of life’s problems can be prevented or solved with a little communication. If you are having difficulty in class, please talk to me.

7. Use of Internet translators is not allowed and will be treated as plagiarism/academic dishonesty. It is obvious when students use online translators or have family/friends help too much with their homework. You may use the online dictionary at http://wordreference.com if you need to look up a word or expression. Keep in mind, however, that using a dictionary well is a learned skill and the dictionary should only be an occasional aid when writing. If students use an online translator, they will receive 0% for the assignment with the opportunity to resubmit the assignment for a maximum of 50%, per the student handbook. See the French Class Honesty Policy handout for more information.

Late Work Policy

Any medium- to high-stakes non-homework assignments are subject to the late work policy. These assignments will lose 5% off the final grade for every class day late.

How to do homework

  1. Check your homework calendar or my website for the assignment.

  2. Use your resources (notes and vocabulary lists) and check spelling. If you need help, consult Wordreference.com/enfr.

  3. Email me with any questions you have or write them on your homework sheet.

  4. Bring to the next class.

  • If you do not understand an assignment or do not have time to complete it due to an extenuating circumstance (severe illness/injury, family emergency, etc.), contact me by email before it is due.

  • Late homework can be turned in during the next class after it is due for 50% credit. After that, I will not accept it.

  • Students who are absent have a grace period in which to make up their work with no penalty. For example, if you have been out for 3 class days, you have 3 class days to make up the work.
