Jazz I Blue Big Band

Big Band is the premier jazz ensemble at Thunderbird High School. This is a very prestigious and competitive group. The focus of this ensemble is to perform literature and build skills that will prepare the students for playing jazz beyond high school. Outside of class practice is mandatory and there will be additional listening assignments. Membership is determined by audition. This group rehearses daily during 1st Period. 

Jazz II Orange Big Band 

Jazz Orange is designed as an entry level jazz ensemble which focuses on the learning and refinement of basic musical skills in jazz. Jazz Orange will be expected to perform at local and regional festivals at the discretion of the director. Outside of class practice is expected and there will be additional listening assignments. This group rehearses daily during 3rd period.

Jazz rhythm section students are expected to participate in CONCERT BAND as needed.

FEES

Each student is asked to donate or fund-raise $50 each. If the money is not donated or raised, clinicians will not be hired and less music can be purchased.

·         Tax Credit money can be used

·         Fees are used for:

o   Guest clinicians

o   Music

o   Festival expenses

UNIFORMS/Concert Attire 

Both groups will wear black long-sleeved button up collared shirt, black slacks with a black belt (if appropriate), black socks and black shoes. Ties are optional.

GRADING

Grading will be based on:

• Attendance/Participation- 30%

• Performance Reflections/Summative Assessments - 20%

• Pass Offs/Quizzes- 30%

• Listening/Worksheet Assignments- 20%
