Grossmont Students win Congressional App Challenge
Grossmont High School's App Challenge Winners
Over 2,150 students from 123 school districts participated in the 2016 Congressional App Challenge.
Grossmont High School's AP Computer Science students Christina Munoz, Angelica Ramirez and Kyle Trusso won the Congressional App challenge by building an Android homework tracker application. They have been invited to Washington, DC to participate in the #HOUSEOFCODE event in Washington, DC next Spring.

Grossmont Girls Earn Grand Prize at Women’s Hackathon
Proud members of Grossmont's Hacker Team
On Saturday, October 15, the Grossmont female computer hacker team consisting of Keilani Thorpe, Ashley Prus, Vina Culas, Lili Flores, Monica Nuno, and Laura Harris won the Grand Prize at Cal State San Marcos Women's Hackathon for a website that they developed for recycling.
The 12-hour semi-annual event is open to all female high school and college students, who work collaboratively to design a website, game, or mobile app that addresses a selected real world challenge.
The Grossmont team competed against 50 other girls from high schools across the county and from some of the local colleges. We are very proud of our students and their IT Pathway teacher Patrick Giovengo, as well as teacher Todd Benrud who equipped them with website building foundations last year.

GHS CTE Pathways
Career Technical Education (CTE) at GHS is designed to prepare students for college and careers by connecting rigorous academic coursework with hands-on, real-world applications to promote critical thinking and high achievement. Students complete a two or three-year pathway in their chosen area of study. Certain pathways are articulated with local colleges, while others offer certifications.
CTE pathways are a great way for students to connect their current classes to their post-secondary plans. For more information, click on one of the pathway icons below.
What does a pathway look like?
A pathway integrates rigorous academic instruction with a demanding technical curriculum and field-based learning—all set in the context of one of California’s 15 major industry sectors. At GHS, we offer pathways in Education, Sports Medicine, Arts/Media/Entertainment, Information & Communication Technology, Transportation.
This demanding technical component delivers concrete knowledge and skills with an emphasis on real-world applications, bringing their academic and technical learning to life. The focus is on preparing youth for high-skill, high-wage employment through courses in cutting-edge areas of study.
Integrating technical and academic content allows students (and teachers) to explore connections in depth—and ultimately deepens student understanding and makes learning more exciting and relevant.
Students in pathways are expected to take a multi-year sequence of courses that begins with a foundation course in 9th or 10th grade, and adds increasingly advanced and challenging content in upper-level courses as they progress through high school. This technical core often culminates in a capstone senior project that demonstrates mastery in their chosen area of study—and in some cases, leads to certification for students. In addition, all technical courses should align with state content standards, and stay current with the latest developments in the industry.
