Pre-Collegiate Mathematics
MA096 is an accelerated, non-traditional course that is designed for students to complete all developmental math requirements in one semester. This course will help students acquire the skills needed for a college-level mathematics course. Classroom instruction is comprised of the following: accelerated, modular and mastery instructional strategies, computer-assisted learning, and active, non-traditional learning strategies. Upon successful completion of this course, students may register for MA110A.
Within this class, we have four different groups:
Group Alpha: MA085 Entry Level
Group Beta: MA108 Entry Level
Group Charlie: MA095 Entry Level
And each student will work through each lesson with the following:
1. Video Lessons - The video links can be found on this website in the "Lesson Materials" folder below or within your Mathxl "Study Guides". I highly recommend you watch the videos before class, but the class is flexible enough so that you can watch it then. If you watch it during class time, please use your headphones and be mindful of those around you. While watching the videos, remember to take notes. The more senses you use, the more you retain - look, listen, and write. These videos are available 24/7 using the YouTube website or app. (Note: these videos are unlisted; you cannot search for them. Use appropriate links to connect to them).
2. Class Activities - Various in-class activities will be done to enhance your study skills and deepen your understanding of the content.
3. Practice and Check - Practice and check will be done in your Mathxl "Study Guides" or the worksheets provided on this website "Lesson Materials" folder below. Mathxl "Study Guides" problems provide hints if you do not get the correct answer. After three tries, the correct answer and explanation will show. Then you can try again until you feel confident with the concept. We do not practice to get the right answer, we practice until we are confident to move forward. As for the worksheets, you have a separate answer key. Practice on your own, then check your comprehension. Lastly, always remember when you practice, MISTAKES ARE LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES.
4. Practice Quiz - Practice Quizzes are only available for students with Mathxl accounts. This provides all students an opportunity to focus on the main problems for each quiz. Furthermore, you can do the practice as many times as your heart desires. Also please remember to submit every time you log out of your quiz. If you do not submit, you will be locked out of your account.
5. Mastery Check - Mastery Checks, in the form of quizzes and tests, are password protected in your Mathxl account or printed by me. When you are ready, raise your hand or see me about the password. In order to PASS, you must score with a 70% or above. If you do not achieve the minimum score, you must pass a practice quiz again in order to unlock a retake. Mathxl accounts allow you to review your answers. If you have any questions on the answer, we can go over it together. For those who have a printed Quiz, you are to use your notes and redo the questions with the correct answer. Please present your work and if you get it correct, then you can do a retake.
Other Info:
1. Target Goals - Target goals can be found below. Each day, the target goals should be completed by the end of class. This gives you an idea if you need to catch up, if you are on track, or if you are ahead. Furthermore, I will be putting the target goals on the board as a reminder.
2. In Class - Attendance is highly recommended. Each day, I will speak with each student one-on-one with their progress. It is a great time to ask me questions and engage with your classmates. Your classmates have the same goal as you. Who better to work with. When I am not available, students are highly encouraged to collaborate with each other when they are not testing. There are so many benefits to peer tutoring, see Orientation Part 1. As a classroom network, we are all in this together!
