Timothy Pierce - Men's Head Coach
After two months of hard work on the ergs and on the Hooch, it was finally time to commence the Fall racing season. The Men’s Club 4+ raced on Saturday, placing 29th out of 43. While they didn’t requalify, they had one of their best rows of the year and beat several local rivals. On Sunday, the Men’s Collegiate 4+ battled through the field in near-perfect racing conditions to place 14th out of 41 and requalify for HOCR 2026. Coxswains Margaret Moe and Alan Thomas Saju, in their first ever Head of the Charles, steered exceptional lines and managed the racing traffic with ease.
Both boats learned a lot from their first race of the season and look forward to getting even faster for their next two races. This was the most successful Head of the Charles for the varsity men in recent history, showing the progress that has been made to rebuild the team. The varsity men’s performance at Charles has the coaches excited to see how we stack up at the Head of the Hooch this weekend, and Head of the South the following weekend. The rowers are excited to have a strong finish to the racing season before we start putting in the work on the ergs to prepare for the spring season. Go Jackets.
Men's Club 4+: 29th/43
Men's Collegiate 4+: 14th/41
Women's Collegiate 4+: 35th/41
Women's Collegiate 8+: 30th/36
Thank you to all the friends of GT Crew who raced and made this year's Head of the Charles truly memorable.
"A few weeks ago, I had the chance to race in the Georgia Tech Men’s Alumni 4+ at the Head of the Charles, where we finished 11th out of 24 and requalified the boat for next year. Our crew included alumni from several generations of GT Rowing, and although we went out for a light practice on Friday, the first time we all rowed together was on the row to the start line Saturday morning. With no formal race plan beyond good vibes, Kyle (‘21) set a smooth rhythm from stroke seat, and we found our swing right away, walking through several crews early and holding off an eager Yale alumni boat charging in the first half. Despite a few choppy moments, we found another gear through Anderson and executed a strong sprint in the last 1.5k to secure a requal spot. It was a beautiful day, a great race, and a really special experience to share with such a fun group of Yellow Jackets. It was also a personally satisfying moment for me, to requalify in Boston in a gorgeous yellow Hudson 4+ dedicated to my late friend and fellow rower, Daniel Perry."

"It was so much fun to get to race in the 8+ at HOCR this year with other alumnae and former teammates! Our crew worked well together and had a solid race after training for the past few months. We had contact with other boats for almost the entire race, and got to pass the 4 crews that started ahead of us. Milly did an amazing job keeping us relaxed through some really tight turns under bridges too. Afterwards, we were able to cheer on the current GT students while they competed. I loved having this opportunity as a way to keep competing stay connected to other alumni!"

Josh Johnston (‘17) and Liza Joyce (‘19) participated in the alumni boats at Head of the Charles a week before their upcoming wedding in Chattanooga, TN. The couple connected on the team when Liza, as social promoter, placed them in the same buddy family (she swears the pairings were selected alphabetically!).
For Liza, getting to race in the alumni 8+ with former teammates and a few new faces was an ambition she didn’t know she had, and she thanks her boatmates who are currently coaches (Beth Thomas & Hannah Heyerdahl) for coming up with workout plans and providing plenty of motivation in the boat’s group chat.
As one of two semi-last minute replacements, Josh was pleased with his boats ability to requalify and enjoyed getting to know alumni that he didn’t overlap with during his time on the team.
Both currently reside in Salem, MA with their dog and two cats.

"Head of the Charles is a crucial benchmark for the team. It’s an opportunity to see how we stack up against many crews that we won’t see again until ACRA. Last weekend, the men’s team showed a great step forward in the Collegiate and Club 4+ events, especially with the Collegiate 4+ requalifying the boat by placing 14th - the first time the men’s team has done so since before Covid. We are incredibly excited to come back together as an 8+ and show what we can do at Head of the Hooch! This was my second time racing in Boston, and I am once again wowed by the energy of the event. It’s hard not to feel a renewed sense of vigor when brushing shoulders with national-teamers or hearing the crowds on Elliot bridge. We’re looking forward to coming back next year and continuing to push the standard for Georgia Tech crews."
"Last year’s varsity women’s boat was composed of an entirely new crew—none of whom had ever attended the Head of the Charles before. The Head of the Charles is a sacred regatta for most crews, and for GT crew, it often represents the pinnacle of our rowing careers. This year, we were able to send an 8+ and 4+, almost tripling the number of GT varsity women to attend from 2024. As a senior, it was so special to see my younger teammates experience this privilege for the first time, and reunite with past teammates in the alumni 8+. We could not have asked for better weather, better energy, better people. I’m forever grateful for getting to make the pilgrimage to Charles for one last time as a member of Georgia Tech crew—we will cherish these memories forever!"
"Competing at the Head of the Charles will undoubtedly be one of my best memories during my time at Georgia Tech. On our first day in Boston, we walked from Harvard down along the race course and saw thousands of boats and even more rowers, coxswains, and spectators from around the world. The love and community around rowing felt endless. As for the race, we gave it our all and the Charles felt like a beast with its countless bridges and unforgiving turns. While we did not place where we wanted to and it was disappointing to not guarantee our bid for next year, it has only made us eager for more. Almost every day, we go out on the Hooch or strap in to the ergs at the CRC and get in as many meters as we can. But in my mind, I can now picture the unimaginably large world of rowing outside of our club. This race made me want to push harder and faster at home so that when the Varsity Women hopefully get to return next year, we walk away knowing we have set up GT Crew to return to HOCR for years to come."
