Hello parents,
I am working on some plans to be able to stay connected with all of my grade 3 French immersion families. I miss your kids SO MUCH!
I am passionate about French and will do my best to bring French to you!
I am hoping to communicate lessons, videos, games with you on google classroom. I will set out a daily plan that you could follow to try to keep some kind of routine for you at home, and you can implement it whichever way works best for you. I know that many of you already access Google classroom through your child’s account. That seems to be the easiest way. Each student should know how to access Google classroom. The link is through engaging students. Their email and password should be on the first page of their agenda.
Please follow this link. There is a “Parent guide to google classroom” that you may find useful.

Google Hangout/Google Meets
I hope to be able to use Google Hangout/Google Meets with your child!
You can access Google Hangout/Google Meets by signing into your gmail account or you can probably download an App.
You will receive an invitation from me through your email.
Google translate or French/English dictionary
Google translate on the computer/ipad/phone or your child’s actual french/english dictionary will become their new best friend. One of the challenges of being in immersion is to develop new vocabulary with each new topic of study. It is usually much easier for them to think of the english word which is why it is important that they learn, at a young age, to find the french vocabulary independently. They will need help to begin with, to use these tools but this time will pay off in the long run.
Francais
Handwriting - The students have a handwriting or écriture cursive duo-tang in their bag of materials. They could be practicing a new letter daily. They may need some guidance to learn each new letter.
Daily French comprehension - March
We have done many comprehension activities in class. In google classroom you will find daily comprehension activities. I will assign a page to do daily or every other day. You may choose to print out this document or just have them read it and answer the questions on a lined paper/scribbler, whatever works best for you. I gave french instructions for the students in Google classroom.
Writing assignments
I will try to provide the students with a weekly writing assignment in French. The first 2 weeks writing assignment is already posted on Google classroom. Write a descriptive paragraph of the Easter bunny.
Dictée words
We will continue with the same format as we have done in the classroom, this way it is familiar to them. Attached is a document that explains the activities for each day.
Daily activities for dictée words
Tumblebooks
This is a website where students can listen to french stories that have the written words displayed as well. There are english books on this site as well, they need to choose french on the Language bar.
Language Arts
Daily Language Review
This is a new activity for the students and they may need help to start, Monday through Thursday activities your child will edit sentences and make corrections for capitalization, punctuation and grammar.
Friday activities. It is a way to practice a variety of language and reading skills. Friday is a focus on a single skill. If you wish they could complete a daily practice progress record to track their work for the week. You could print out these pages or just start a duo-tang or scribbler where they would just jot down the corrections.
Words Their Way - Can print or make your own cards of the words.
I’d like to have the students continue the work on Words Their Way. Here is the document that explains the activities to do each day of the week with these words. Of course this can be modified to make it work for you at home and within your schedule.
Words Their Way - Daily activities
The sorts can be found in the Google Classroom for group A and Group B. You do not have to print out these lists, you could simply have your child write them out on little cards or papers. They will need to manipulate or move the words around in different groups/sorts and orders throughout the week.
Group 1 - Sort 48
Group 2 - Sort 5
STARS- Strategies To Achieve Reading Success- Book in their materials
In class we have completed the first 3 lessons and the review lesson 1-3. Each lesson focuses on teaching the students a new comprehension strategy. Once we are all set and rolling I will assign 1 lesson per week. This will be indicated on their Daily assignments in Google Classroom. In Google classroom, there is a short you-tube clip (for most strategies) that explains what the strategy is.
My hope is to eventually video each lesson and work through the strategy with the students this way.
Here are the procedures I will follow using Lesson 4, our next lesson, as an example.
Page 38. Read through the page and have the student answer the questions.
Page 39.- Read through the page, which will explain how the strategy works.
Page 40 - Read through the grey box and highlight the key words or ideas to help apply this strategy. Read the little story and the example.
Page 41 - Read through the story and answer the questions. In class we have worked on going back in the text and underlining or highlighting where they found the answer and putting the question number beside it. We’ve also talked about how sometimes the answer cannot be found directly in the story, they just need to think about what the story said.
Page 42 and 43 - They need to read and answer the questions of the text. They need to remember to fold back page 43 to hide the answers and then check to see if they answered correctly.
Page 44 and 45 - This was usually done with a partner or small group. They read and answer the questions.
Page 46 and 47 was done independently and in the past I used these pages as an evaluation.
Writing assignments
I will be giving 1 writing assignment a week. This will be posted on Google Classroom. The first assignment I gave was to reply to a letter I wrote to them in Google Classroom. I will be replying to their letters and they are free to write to me any time they wish. I’m sort of hoping it can be a little like a digital journal between us.
In class we were working on story writing. So far we have learned about entertaining beginnings and the importance of good descriptions and details.
RAZ-Kids
RAZ-kids is a digital website that they should all be familiar with. The students have used it in class and the link can be found on Google classroom. They each have their own password. Please let me know if they are unable to login. On this site, each student is placed at their reading level. They can listen to the story or read it on their own. There are comprehension questions that go along with each book they read. They earn stars as they read and do the comprehension activities. Each student can work their way up to the next level. If you feel the level that your child is at currently is too difficult or too easy, please let me know and I can adjust that. I’m currently working on giving you access to see your child’s progress. I’ll let you know when that is set up.
