3rd grade students have Spanish twice a week for 20 minutes. We start doing more writing this year, although our emphasis remains on listening and speaking.
We begin 3rd grade with one of my favorite units of study--food! This takes us through the first half of the year as we learn words in the basic food groups first quarter, and then 2nd quarter learn about traditional Hispanic dishes and restaurant vocabulary. Students practice ordering in a restaurant. 3rd quarter we learn about places in our community, using forms of the verb "ir" which means "to go". 4th quarter we study transportation words. As this is roughly the mid-way point in their GS Spanish career, 3rd grade students participate in an "exit interview" at the end of the year, responding to essential questions from grades K-3.
