Who is Robyn Wallace?
I was born in Mankato, Minnesota, but since then I've had the privilege of living many different places. My dad was a college professor at the University of Minnesota. When I was 12 we moved to a suburb of Maryland outside of Washington, D.C. Along with my brothers and sister, I graduated from the University of Maryland and began supporting my husband who was attending dental school. For 18 years I was a stay at home mom to my three children, Steven, Christopher and Megan. My family lived in Alitzheim, Germany, for three years while my husband was an officer in the US Army Dental Corps. From Germany, my family moved to Southern Vermont. I was a substitute teacher, volunteer and eventually became the Chairman of the Dover School Board in Dover, Vermont. With my children getting older, I decided to go back to graduate school and get a Master's degree in education so that I could teach. I graduated from Antioch New England Graduate School the same year my oldest son graduated from high school.
I began my first teaching experience in a small Catholic school teaching second grade. I loved working with students who were learning to read! After three years, I moved to Dover Elementary to teach third and fourth grades. It was great to be teaching students from the town I lived in...but the cold Vermont winters were getting to me!
In 2005 I moved to South Carolina to escape the cold weather. I got a job teaching English/language arts at Tanglewood Middle School. I taught there for three years and gained experience as a middle school teacher. In the summer of 2008, I decided to move to a school closer to where I live. Greer Middle has been wonderful for me. I taught seventh grade ELA for 10 years, but this will be my first experience in Greer at sixth grade.
I love learning and I find that I am constantly involved in the process of being a student myself. I was honored to be selected to participate in a National Endowment for the Humanities Workshop on the Civil Rights Era at Georgia State University in Atlanta, GA in 2008. In previous summers I have completed workshops on Zora Neale Hurston, The Holocaust, Carl Sandburg, SC Geography, Classroom technology and We the People: Student Advocacy. I spent an amazing week at the Williamsburg Teacher Institute. Four summers ago, I was chosen for my third NEH Workshop and spent a week at Delta State University studying the Mississippi Delta under the guidance of Dr. Luther Brown. I was also chosen to participate in the highly competitive Gilder Lehrman Teacher Workshops. I spent a week at the University of Pennsylvania in study of the 1960's with Dr. Thomas Sugrue. Two years ago, I was selected to participate in the Belfor Conference at the National Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. I spent time studying the best ways to present the topic of the Holocaust to middle schoolers in an educational setting. Last year I was chosen for a Civil Rights Movement tour sponsored by Freedoms Foundation and I spent two weeks in Europe. I went to Iceland, England, France, Switzerland, Austria and Germany. This summer I went to Beijing, China and Japan. I love traveling to new places on my time away from Greer Middle.
I look forward to working with your child on this educational journey!
