Preschool Special Education Program Goal
The overall goal of the Preschool Special Education self-contained classroom is to improve children’s overall understanding of the world and to strengthen their desire to learn. Developmentally appropriate, intellectually challenging learning opportunities are planned to meet all children’s individual education goals as described in their Individualized Education Program. Throughout the week, students who qualify for speech/language, occupational or physical therapy, nursing services as well as vision services receive these services either within the classroom or in another location at school.
Description of Students Being Taught
Each student enrolled in a Preschool Special Education class has an Individual Education Program (IEP) designed specifically to meet the needs of that particular child. Students may qualify for the preschool special education program due to delays in one or more of the following areas: communication (speech), self-help (adaptive), motor (fine & gross), social/emotional and academic readiness (cognition). All students are three, four and five years old.
Learner Expectations
Learner expectations are based on the individual child’s needs and developmentally appropriate milestones for three, four and five year olds.
Instructional Materials and Resources
Preschool Special Education actively involves children in learning experiences consistent with their development and help children acquire a strong foundation for future success. Our program is currently following the Read It Once Again curriculum which is an early childhood literacy curriculum with an intense focus on language and foundational skills. The program is based on monthly literature units that are engaging and developmentally appropriate (see specific literature/units on teacher website). This program is directly linked to the South Carolina Early Learning Standards.

Assessment and Evaluation of Student Progress
Evidence for assessment will include the following sources:
· Brigance Early Learning Inventory
MyIgdis Literacy and Math Assessment
· Anecdotal records based on teacher observation and weekly data collection
· Work samples
· Therapists’ reports on student progress
Mastery of Individualized Education Program goals will be based on the above information.
Student Progress Reporting
Student progress is shared with parents throughout the year. Written reports of progress on Individualized Education Program goals are sent home every nine weeks. The IEP team meets annually to discuss student progress and to develop new goals if necessary. Parent input is a key component to the development of the IEP and is highly valued. Children will also receive a 4K Report Card quarterly.
Home/School Connection
Our parent/teacher communication can occur in multiple ways. We use Class Dojo as a way for parents and teachers to communicate with each other by sending messages, photos and work samples. Phone calls and emails can also be utilized although during the school day calls to the classroom will be directed to voicemail and returned within 24 hours.
Newsletter & Website
A weekly newsletter will be sent home (and posted on the teacher website). Both the newsletter and website contain valuable information regarding important dates and parent resources. The website can be accessed through the Golden Strip Center at Bryson Elementary web site in the Staff Directory section.
Attendance Policies
Every school day is important. Regular, prompt attendance helps young children build a lifetime of good school habits. If possible please schedule private therapies outside of the core instructional hours (9:00 – 1:30). We recognize the importance and value of private therapies to each child’s overall progress/development so please communicate with us if the schedule conflicts with the core instructional day. We will do our best to adjust our therapy schedule to accommodate your child’s schedule.
Building Responsible and Respectful Behavior
Our goals are to build self-regulation, respect for others, and develop individual responsibility. Clear, consistent expectations and routines provide a framework for responsible student behavior and will be modeled and reviewed as needed.
Procedure for Non-Instructional Routines
Parents are required to notify the teacher and school office with any address/phone number changes. Children are encouraged to leave all personal articles and toys at home. Car/Bus tags are required to be displayed when you collect your child from school or off the bus. If you need more tags please come to the office to collect them. If you (or your designee) do not have the required tag you will be required to show a photo ID.
Birthday Celebrations: If you would like to send in treats for your child’s birthday only commercially prepared products can be given out at school (nothing homemade). Due to student allergies we are a nut-free classroom.
Required Supplies: The only required supplies are those needed for your specific child. Please send at least one change of clothes (shirt, pants, underwear and socks) for your children that we can keep here at school. If your child is not yet toilet trained, we will also need a supply of diapers/pull-ups. If your child is in the process of being toilet trained, please ensure that we have several complete changes of clothes. If your child does need a clothing change, we will send the wet or dirty clothes home in a plastic bag and you will know to send in another set of clean clothes.
Daily Schedule: Routines and schedules are very important for our early learners. We refer to, and follow, a visual daily schedule. We are committed to providing your child with the best early learning experience possible. We consider parents to be the most valuable members of your child’s team! Please come to us with any questions or concerns. Welcome to our School Family!
