Elementary Physical Education

The goal of elementary PE is to empower students to develop healthy habits, instill fitness literacy and become lifelong participants of physical activity through the implementation of the following:

  • Introducing healthy habits

  • Developing fundamental skills needed to begin and maintain a healthy physically active lifestyle for the rest of their life

  • Providing all students with comprehensive and rigorous Physical Education instruction.

  • Validating the importance of physical activity and the impact that it will have on their lives

  • Providing a wide variety of movement experiences that are worthwhile and meaningful to enhance lifelong activity

  • Participating in fitness assessments that provide valuable reflection of past and current ability levels in addition to serving as the basis for determining future potential

  • Preparing students for success & failure as part of the educational process

  • Fostering character & social development

  • Improving self-esteem and confidence through continued physical activity

  • Encouraging respect for themselves with the opportunity to develop an appreciation for the differences found in others

  • Teaching students the value of personal responsibility, character, integrity, and respect for others in the classroom, gymnasium, and in life

  • Emphasizing the direct correlation between physical wellness and academic achievement

  • Increasing health & wellness literacy through exposure to academic content aligned with state standards

Students learn to develop and maintain a healthy level of fitness, find personal enjoyment in life-long physical activity, and interact positively with others in sports and activities.

The CATCH (Coordinated Approach To Child Health) curriculum is used in Kindergarten through 5th grade. The primary goal of CATCH’s Physical Education component is to increase the amount of moderate-to-vigorous activity (MVPA) children engage in during their PE time. CATCH PE encourages at least 50% MVPA during PE time. CATCH also encourage students to receive 60 minutes of physical activity every day.

CATCH introduces students to a variety of essential movement concepts and fundamental skill themes. Lessons are fun and help children acquire the fundamental competencies that are the foundation for more complex skill mastery.

2021 Academic Standards for Physical Education

Students’ progress toward proficiency at different rates and time, and at similar ages can demonstrate varying proficiency levels. The South Carolina College- and Career-Ready Standards for Physical Education 2021 outlines the standard and indicator proficiency progression rather than the specific grade level. Teachers have the opportunity to identify and differentiate learning for all learners based on the students’ proficiency range. This document describes the learning goals a learner should demonstrate at three levels of proficiency. All performance indicators in the standards document begin with “I can…” so that learners are at the center of all physical education programs, can self-assess, and can use evidence to demonstrate progress in proficiency. The three proficiency levels used are novice, intermediate, and advanced.
