How can I help my child at home:

1. Provide a quiet place to read.

2. Make it a habit to read with your child daily. Take turns reading! Children never get tired of sharing some quiet time with their parents.

3. Go to the library and let your child check out books that are interesting to him/her.

4. Read anything and everything! Road signs, stores signs, restaurant menus, items in the grocery stores.

5. When your child gets to a word they don't know:

*wait 5 seconds before offering help

*ask them to give the sound for each letter then blend the sounds together

*when they think they know the word, have them read the word in the sentence

  6.  Ask about the story then have your child ask you questions about the story. They love to come up with a question an adult can't answer!

  7. Pick a word in the story that your child may not understanding its meaning. Ask them what they think the word means. Then discuss with your child the meaning of the word and use it in a sentence.
