Students enrolled in 6th, 7th and 8th grade French at Greenville Middle Academy took part in Le Grand Concours, the National French Contest, an annual exam sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French.

Students of French in grades 1-12 from all across the United States take a written test, competing against peers with similar educational backgrounds for prizes. Students in 6th grade French who placed among the highest written scores in the country also took an oral exam. For many of these students, the difference in placement scores was .0005.

This year, Greenville Middle Academy students placed among the top students across the nation earning eleven medals. In 6th grade French Immersion Transition, Ariel Shepherd earned the silver medal with a national rank of 3rd. Elizabeth Sparks earned the silver medal in the native speaker category for 6th grade with a national rank of 3rd. In French II, Anna Scott Cameron, ranked 2nd in South Carolina and 3rd in the nation, earned the silver medal out of over 24,000 students who took the exam.

The following students earned bronze medals: in 6th grade Immersion Transition, Myra Bowling ranked 6th in the nation, Sarah Driggers ranked 5th in the nation, and Michael Dogan ranked 9th in the nation. Among native speakers of French, Lucy Howle earned the bronze medal ranked 7th in the nation. In French I earning the bronze medal were Seyunta’ Dotson, ranked 5th in South Carolina and 7th in the nation, and Bryanna Fulton, ranked 6th in South Carolina and 8th in the nation. Cassandra D’Amico earned the bronze medal in the native speaker category with a rank of 3rd in South Carolina and 4th in the nation.

In French II, ranked 7th in South Carolina and 8th in the nation, Ian Hammond earned the bronze medal.

These students will receive their medals at the Greenville Middle Academy awards ceremony to be held at the end of May.
