SkillsUSA

SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. A nonprofit national education association, SkillsUSA serves middle-school, high-school and college/postsecondary students preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations.

Each year, students in Digital Art and Design enter technical skill based competitions for Pin and T-shirt Design. Students submit contest entries at the state level and the South Carolina gold medalists from each competition will have the opportunity to compete at Nationals in Atlanta! There are many additional competitions available for students to enter into, and students may even team up with peers from other classes. This year, we also have a student member serving as a State Officer who will travel to Washington D.C. in September to attend the Washington Leadership Training Institute.

In June 2022, seven Golden Strip students entered National competitions. They prepared presentations, practiced speeches, created menus, reviewed safety protocols for specific competitions, thought through steps and procedures, and finally, entered the Georgia World Congress Center to compete in Automotive Refinishing Technology, Culinary, Plumbing, T-Shirt Design, and Promotional Bulletin Board. Our Promotional Bulletin Board earned a spot in the second round of judging, finishing 4th in the nation and our T-Shirt Design placed Top 10 in the nation!

In addition to competitions and SkillsUSA events, these students attended a Braves baseball game in Truist Park, visited the World of Coca-Cola, rode the Skyview Ferris Wheel, ate at the Hard Rock Cafe and The Varsity, and wrapped up the trip with a day at Six Flags Over Georgia.
