Homework

Homework... will be assigned on Fridays and collected on Thursdays. This allows time to organize homework around other events and activities during their week (allowing time to complete it on the weekend if needed). Encourage your child to plan ahead for their week. For example, ask your child if there is a night that they know they will not have time for homework and plan a day that they can complete it with less stress (and to ensure assignments are not left to the last minute or forgotten). As a parent also, I understand the extra activities in many children’s lives. It is often a hard balance. Feel free to contact me if your child is unable to complete homework due to circumstances beyond their control. The purpose of homework is to help them to develop independence, time management skills, and to practice concepts learned in class, not to overwhelm them by adding unnecessary stress.

*Note*...When a child is absent from school, a folder of missed work is collected on their desk, to go over with the teacher upon return to class.

Please monitor your child to ensure that they have completed their assignments.

  • Encourage your son/daughter to complete the homework to the best of their ability and pass it in on time.

  • Homework will be sent home in your child's "Message Bag" on Friday and is due the following Thursday (but students may pass in assignments as they complete them). Once the teacher has checked homework, it will be sent home to keep. Please read over any teacher feedback with your child to encourage growth.

  • If an assignment is too difficult, or time consuming, please let me know (a short note, quick call or email is fine). Homework should take no longer then 20 minutes at the Grade 2 level (this includes their nightly “At Home Reading Program” too).

Reading... students are encouraged to read daily if possible (for about 15-20 minutes...or longer if they wish!) and complete their Monthly Reading Log. Three "Just Right" books will be taken home weekly to be exchanged on Thursday or Friday (their preference), but students may read books from home also. Please review the attached handout on how you can support your child's reading growth as reading is the most important element of their homework.

MathMath practice sheets or games will be assigned (to apply concepts taught in class). Your child should be able to complete these independently (unless additional players are needed to play a game). In addition, on my class website you can find additional MATH games, extra practice, and fun activities!

Writingstudents will be given an "At Home Writer's Notebook" for home writing assignments (every 2nd week). Encourage your child to follow the steps included on the assignment. We will read it over together in class, but please review the assignment with your child to ensure their understanding. Students may need reminding to sound out their words, check for punctuation, and print neatly. Also, space is provided for an illustration to improve the "presentation" of their work.

Projects... Over the year, there may be a few FUN "at home" projects assigned. Plenty of notice will be given for completion.
