As requested by Ann Power, please see below the message below from Maureen Brennan, Director, Mental Health and Addictions at the IWK:

I wanted to reach out to you and the Department of Education to acknowledge the horrific situation that has occurred in our province. Like you, we are in shock and deeply saddened by what has happened. Our thoughts and most sincere condolences are with the family members, friends, and neighbors who experienced a loss of a loved one on the weekend.

I realize there is much uncertainty surrounding this pandemic.  The added layer of complexity associated with the changes to virtual school and the recent tragic events will no doubt impact many children and youth across Nova Scotia.  We know these are challenging times and times we all need to pull together.   I wanted to remind you that the Mental Health and Addictions Services are open to for business across the province.  All non-urgent, urgent, and emergency departments services are open to those in need.

I have attached a few links that might be helpful for your staff when talking to their own families as well as the children and youth they work with. Are you able to add these to your website so families know the MHA program is open to support them?  https://www.hrce.ca/student_supports

For those looking for evidence informed resources for children, youth, families and clinicians, the National Child Trauma Stress Network is a good site: https://www.nctsn.org/what-is-child-trauma/trauma-types/terrorism-and-violence/mass-violence
