Career & Work Education

EIGHTH GRADE

These students will begin the year by researching a career. We will discuss career awareness, preparation, and acquisition. I will teach them how to create a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation. They will learn how to insert pictures, make backgrounds, create custom animations, and save information. They will then create a 3-5 minute Microsoft PowerPoint presentation related to this career. They will be self-sufficient, living on their own. They will be required to purchase a home, automobile, clothing, and pay numerous bills. The purpose of this project is for students to see that education is important and to learn the value of a dollar.

Then students will learn how use Microsoft Publisher. They will create a resume that can be used as a life-long work in progress. They will be able to add and delete material when needed. They will also create two tri fold brochures. One will advertise for a business and the second will educate or describe a process that includes numerous steps. Students will create their own web page. They will be required to take pictures using a digital camera and upload them to their files. This class will learn what it is like to actually work for a business.

Finally, students will learn about career retention and advancement.
