Welcome to iUniversity prep! My name is Mr. Duban and the wonderful lady in the picture is my wife Liz. She teaches 5th grade science in Carrollton TX. This is my second year at iUniversity and I am excited to be teaching Science and Social Studies at the high school and middle school level. I will be teaching IPC (Integrated Chemistry and Physics), Earth and Space Science, Psychology, Sociology and 7th grade science.
Before iUniversity, I taught 2 years of 8th grade science at Austin middle school in Irving TX and one year of high school Chemistry and IPC at Singley Academy in Irving. I will miss those schools dearly but I am also excited to continue my journey with iUniversity.
Why I teach:
I graduated magna cum laude from the University of North Texas with a Master of Education and a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and a minor in chemistry and biology. Despite my success and love of education at the collegiate level, I also know what it is like to struggle and be frustrated during my middle and high school secondary years. I know what it feels like to be at the top of my class and the bottom. I have seen through the eyes of all types of students and it is my passion to help students whether they are excelling, struggling or somewhere in between.
Tips for success:
Communication is key: iUniversity staff prides ourselves on being available and responsive. If you ever have a question (parent or student!), please let me, the office or specific content teacher know and we will get back to you as soon as possible. If you have a question there are probably numerous other parents or students that have the same question so don't be shy! :)
Organization: Most students thrive thanks to our flexible pacing but it is possible to get behind. Make sure to always check your connexus calendar for the recommended pace and if you find yourself getting a little behind contact your teachers for clarification before anything snowballs. Many successful students keep a personal planner on top of the connexus planner.
Have fun!: My background is in science so I never thought I would be teaching social studies. After preparing for the social studies certification exam, those type of classes are some of my favorite to teach now! In this spirit, I believe all knowledge is obtainable and enjoyable if you go in with an open mind and put forth a great effort from the start! To this day I still have many "aha! moments" and I love when my students do too!
Things I like to do in my free time:
Tennis! I am not as good as I used to be but I hope to play this awesome game for the rest of my life. I also happened to meet my wife on the UNT club tennis team so I am very partial to the sport : )
Chess! One of my favorite strategic games. Chess teaches you to think ahead and problem solve. Did you know that chess is banned in some countries because the rulers are afraid of it causing an uprising?? I also play many strategic computer games (which are basically chess with a little luck) and welcome a challenge from a student but only if all your work is done! :)
Travel! My wife and I on the Sydney bridge in Australia.
Science! I love teaching science because I love science!
