One component that makes Highland School of Technology stand above other high schools is how teachers work together to develop integrations that demonstrate to students how each subject is linked to other subjects and the real world. Students value their education when they can see what they learn in school connect to what they do in their everyday life. Also, we are making life long learners when students understand the connection between what they learn and how it can be used in the future.
An integration can be a classroom activity or a week long project. It can be completed with only the students in one single classroom or the combined efforts of different teachers and classes. Below are some integrations I have used in the past.
___________
Motherboard integration with Art classes - Computer Engineering students teamed up with Art students to draw a section of a motherboard while the Art students learned about the motherboard components. The separate drawings were then pieced together as a puzzle.
Industrial Revolution - Students research and learn how the Industrial Revolution had a tremendous impact on the world.
PC Repair Business - In this activity students create a business plan proposal for a PC Repair business. They incorporate their PC knowledge along with other subjects such as Principles of Business, Graphics (logos and business cards), and Civics and Economics (finding an available local space for their business). This is one of the logos created by students.
How To video/slideshow - In this activity students create a video detailing how to replace various PC components. It integrates Computer Engineering with Graphics, Video Editing, and English (writing scripts). This is a screenshot from one of the videos.
