Tutorials:
Tutorials are held every weekday morning in my classroom. However, I have determined Monday, Wednesday, and Friday as formal tutorial days. I invite student athletes to attend at least one of these formal tutorial sessions to ensure they do not fall behind in their academics.
Syllabus:
Grading Policy
Daily/Homework- 25% of total grade
(Class work, home work, journals etc.)
Major Grades- 40% of total grade
(Tests, projects, process papers)
Quizzes and Common Assessments- 35% of total grade
Late Work Policy
Late work submitted will be subjected to a 10-point deduction each day. Therefore, if an assignment is one day late, the highest possible grade is a 90%. An assignment turned in two days late, the highest possible grade is an 80% and so on.
Absences Policy
Students will be given 3 days upon their return to complete make-up assignments. *Extenuating circumstances will occur. Please contact me with concerns regarding planned/unplanned absences and I will be happy to work with you.*
Supplies
Students should come to class every day prepared to learn. The following supplies need to be brought daily: a composition book (this will be kept in the room), folder (with brads and pockets), a novel of student’s choice (from the library or home), and a writing utensil. I prefer pencil to be used while drafting, but will also accept blue or black pen. ***Additional supplies may be required later in the year, but ample notice will be given.***
Homework
Homework will be assigned as needed to complete class work. Students should read at home from a variety of genres. The only way to become a better reader is to READ!
Ms. Rivas’ Classroom Library
I have a small library of novels for students to borrow. My library policy is the same as the CMS library. If a student borrows a book and loses, the book will need to be replaced by the student.
Pre-AP Rationale
A Pre-AP course is designed to prepare middle-grade students for the Advanced Placement English courses in high school.
*PreAP students are asked to purchase the novels we read in class to make notes/annotations and highlight. The first novel we will read in 7th grade is Touching Spirt Bear by Ben Mikaelsen.
Remind 101
This year I will be reminding and informing you and your child about classroom updates through a new app called Remind 101. This app allows you to text a specific number to subscribe to my assigned class number. Once subscribed, you will not be able to text me back, but I will be sending weekly text messages out to remind you of tests, homework assignments, and other school related information. It is a great tool to keep parents and students involved!
Pre-AP ELA : Text the message “@rivaspreap” to 81010
ELA: Text the message “rivas7th” to 81010
