Algebra II Class Information
Welcome to Algebra II. This sheet will provide you with some general information to get you started in your study of Algebra II for the coming school year. Please read carefully and return the attached page to me with the required signatures. Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
Teacher: Shane Meling e-mail: shane.meling@comalisd.org Phone: (830) 885-9026
Supplies:
- two-pocket folder
- pencils and black/blue pens
- notebook paper
- tissues
- straight edge or ruler
Grading Policy:
- Tests = 45%
- Quizzes = 35%
- Homework/Daily grades = 20%
Homework/Notes/Class Work: Students will be responsible to take notes and complete homework assignments. Notes will be graded based upon completion while homework assignments will be graded. The expectation is that students will turn in assignments through Google Classroom. Also, I do allow the use of the homework and notes on most quizzes. I will allow a notecard that students can make on their own for each test. When the homework is turned in it will be part of the daily grade.
Test/Quiz Retakes: If a student scores below a 70 on a quiz or test they have a chance to improve their grade. On quizzes, students can do corrections and turn it back in to earn half credit for each problem up to a 70 grade. On tests, the student needs to come in during tutorial time within five days of the grade being posted online. If they do test corrections with the me they can then take a retest with the potential to improve the grade to a 70.
Course Outline: We will cover parent functions and attributes of functions; absolute value equations and functions; systems of equations; quadratic functions; solutions of quadratic equations; rational functions; square root functions; exponential functions; logarithmic functions; polynomial functions; radical expressions; cubic and cube root functions.
Absences/Make-Up Work: Each student is responsible for obtaining and completing any missed assignment due to absences. The schedule of assignments is on the class calendar and is subject to change. Tests can be made up during my tutoring times or during study hall. Please individually schedule a time with me. All missing test grades must be made up within 5 days of the test day. Any test not made up within 5 days will result in a zero. Missed quizzes will be made up at the beginning of class the day they return unless the absence is more than one day, then that will be determined between myself and the student. School business is not considered an absence and you should check with me for work ahead of time.
Tutoring: Tutoring is available every afternoon except for Friday. I am a basketball and track coach as well so during those seasons the tutoring schedule will likely change. If I am not available, please check with the other Algebra II teachers (Boswell-D106, Adams-D201). I will be posting tutoring videos and copies of the notes and assignments on my website and in Google Classroom.
Electronic Devices: All electronic devices need to be put away during class. Cell phones should be placed in the appropriate hanging slot next to the board. If cell phones are being used in class the following will occur: first instance, warning and phone is put away; second instance, phone is taken away and can be claimed at the end of class; third instance, phone is taken away and can be claimed at the end of the school day; fourth instance, phone is taken away and can be claimed at the end of the school day, parents are informed. Students will be allowed to get their cell phones after turning in that day’s assignment.
We will follow all school policies concerning the discipline plan and tardy policy. After three tardies the student will have to serve an after school detention.
I expect the students to respect myself, others and themselves in this class. Being positive, prepared and productive are all ways to show respect and will create a great learning environment where we can cultivate a growth mindset. I look forward to working with you this year and developing a growth mindset.
